numbers increased 11 percent from the previous year
and were estimated at 2,100 head. Heifers weighing
500 pounds or more totaled 16,000 head on January 1,
2013, a decrease of 1,000 head from last year’s
estimate. Beef cow replacements (heifers weighing
500 pounds or more) was unchanged at 10,000 head,
while milk cow replacements at 2,000 head doubled,
and other heifers showed a decrease of 2,000 head to
bring the estimate to 4,000 head from a year ago. ■

The total number of cattle and
calves on Hawaii’s ranches as of
January 1, 2013 was estimated at
132,000 head, a decrease of
8,000 head or 5.7 percent from
the previous year’s estimate.
Prolonged drought conditions
over the past several years have
led to poor conditions and
reduced forage in many pasture
areas across the state. These
conditions have led to increasing
operating costs in feeding and
watering cattle, and ultimately
resulting in ranchers decreasing
their herd numbers.
All cows and heifers that have
calved, at 72,000 head indicate a
decline of 10 percent from last
year. Beef cows, which
constitute 53 percent of
Hawaii’s total herd with
69,900 head, also register a
10 percent decrease as
compared to last year. Milk cow

totaled 43,250 head for the year of 2012, down
14 percent from 50,150 head in 2011. This is the second
year in a row cattle marketings have decreased, back in
2010, a total of 60,500 head of cattle were marketed.
Exports accounted for 73 percent of the year’s total with
steers making up 57 percent of the exported cattle.
Local slaughter, accounting for the remaining 27 percent
of marketings totaled 11,600 head by the year’s end. This
is a decrease of 3 percent from the previous year.
The average live weight of commercially slaughtered
cattle in Hawaii during 2012 was 1,136 pounds, up
1 percent or 8 pounds heavier than a year ago. ■

Taro: Production Down 17 Percent
Hawaii taro production for 2012 is estimated
at 3.4 million pounds, a decrease of
17 percent from the 2011 estimate of
4.1 million pounds. The farm price held firm
at an average of 67.0 cents per pound,
resulting in a total value of sales of
approximately 2.3 million dollars.
Taro processing totaled 3.3 million pounds a
decrease of 700,000 pounds from the
previous year. Farmers reported problems
caused by torrential rains in March of 2012 as
washing out entire crops of taro. Later in
the year as drought conditions persisted,
many reported issues with getting enough
water, or that water prices were too high. ■

Coffee: Marketings Forecast Lower
but Higher Value Expected for 2012/13 Season
Hawaii coffee preliminary marketing for 2012/13 is estimated at
7.2 million pounds, 5 percent less than the 2011/12 season. Total
acreage remained unchanged at 8,000 but harvested acreage
declined 200 acres to 6,100. Yields averaged 1,180 pounds per
acre, down 30 pounds from the 2011/12. The Statewide farm
price for coffee averaged $4.80 per pound (parchment
equivalent basis) for the 2012/13 season, 16 percent above the
2011/12 season of $4.15 per pound. The farm revenue for
coffee is estimated at $34.6 million (parchment equivalent
basis) for this season, 10 percent above last season. Coffee
Berry Borer (CBB) continued to be a major concern for the
coffee industry. Some growers are expecting limited sales due
to pest infestation making their season forecast hard to
predict. ■

1 Coffee harvesting occurs throughout the year in Hawaii. The main harvest normally begins in late summer and extends to the early part of the following
year. 2 Average yields based on parchment equivalent marketings and harvested acreage. 3 Expressed in parchment equivalent pounds. Coffee
marketed in cherry form was converted to an equivalent parchment weight and added to parchment marketings. 4 Represents an average farm price
for parchment equivalent sales. Obtained by dividing farm revenues from the sale of cherry and parchment coffee by total marketings (parchment
equivalent basis). 5 Preliminary.
